Umno man cooks up a phony food court deal |

A building contractor wants to sue a former Umno branch leader for allegedly cheating him out of RM15,400 for a food court  project in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur three years ago.
Tiu Chee Kok, 31, claimed that Umno Taman Desa branch chief Majid Mohd Zin had promised him construction rights for over 31 food stalls in 2004.
The project failed to take off and Tiu, whose company specialises in metal parts fabrication, was not compensated for his losses. He now claims that the whole deal was a con job.
"I believed him because he showed me all the documents. Even the cheques looked real," Tiu told a press conference at DAP Teratai headquarters in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur today.
Also present were DAP Teratai community centre director Jenice Lee and the party's labour bureau chairperson A Sivanesan.
Genuine looking letters
During the press conference, Tiu referred to a series of letters written by Majid to various parties as evidence to back his claim.
On June 29 2004, Majid had written to the then Federal Territory Minister Mohd Isa Samad requesting approval that a food court be constructed in Taman Desa.
He had also informed Mohd Isa that Umno Taman Desa branch would be setting up a company called Sterling Agenda Sdn Bhd to collect fees from a nearby privatised parking lot.
On Aug 5 the same year, Majid informed the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) hawker management and small businesses department that Mohd Isa had approved the food court project.
He had also told the council that the Umno Taman Desa branch would be working with Sterling Agenda Sdn Bhd – calling it a private firm – on the food court project.
On Aug 11, Majid wrote to Tiu saying the food court project was in the final stages of approval and would require RM10,000 as deposit for planning costs.
Tiu said he paid a further RM5,400 for the architect and blueprint costs.
Missing with money
After making the payment, Tiu said he did not hear from Majid. He then proceeded to lodge a report to the police and the Umno headquarters.
"It's a con-job right from the beginning. There is no letter from DBKL that says that the stalls would be approved," said Sivanesan.
Sivanesan, who is also a lawyer, said the matter should have been investigated by the police under Section 415 of the Penal Code as cheating.
"It is clear that this is a cheating case. He used the DBKL's name. He used the minister's name. He fabricated the plan that was not approved by DBKL," he added.
He added that the party would be helping Tiu to file a civil suit against Majid if the case was not be re-classified and investigated.
He said both the Umno Seputeh division and Umno headquarters would be included as defendants in the suit.
Jenice remind all contractors who are planning to obtain government project to be extra careful of cheating cases. If there is a government project, the tender have to do some paperworks and all the plan from governmental department should have the department stamping with signature and date.
She also express her great dissapointment with the police action which is very irresponsible.
