KUALA LUMPUR: Jenice Lee, touted as the DAP candidate for the Teratai state seat in Selangor, was born in the Bukit Aman detention centre and instead of treating that as a liability, she feels it will be to her advantage in politics.
Her father Lee Hon Wing, 62, and mother Lee Choong Mooi, 59, were detained under the ISA for two years in 1979, purportedly for communist activities.
The pleasant-faced Lee, 27, is today one of the new, young faces the DAP is expected to field in the general election.
She is the DAP's Teratai Community Centre director and has been active in the constituency for about two years.
Lee, an activist in college, joined the DAP immediately after graduating with an Economics, Politics and International Relations degree from Australia. She became political secretary to Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun for a year before being asked to head the Teratai service centre. Since then, she has been serving the constituents, trying to resolve local and municipal-related issues.
Some DAP members are already referring to her as the next Teresa Kok, the popular Seputeh MP known for her dedication to constituency work.
Partial to snazzy dressing and power suits, Lee will have her chance to prove her mettle when she contests in Teratai.
And she is not bashful about her chances of winning either.
"Residents here see my face all the time.
"They know me because I am active in the community. And I have one thing that Gerakan candidates don't have -- enthusiasm," she said.
Her likely opponent, incumbent Yap Soo Sun of Gerakan, is also not exactly generous when assessing his opponent.
"She's young and she has only been here for a year and four months.
"I doubt voters are very familiar with her. All she does is make a lot of noise.
"What can she do as an opposition representative? Voters are smart enough to know that they need to elect a Barisan Nasional candidate to get anything solved around here," said the one-term assemblyman.
Yap said he was not afraid of Lee. His anxiety was over whether he would make it into the final candidates' list.
